Playa del Carmen History
The history of Playa del Carmen goes as far back as the post-Classical period, during the peak of the great Mayan civilization. The place later became an important fishing area before it has developed into the bustling city and vacation spot we know today. In the early years of the twentieth century, the city became a part of the Quintana Roo state in the Mexican territory.
As the Great Mayan Reef, (second largest reef system in the world) became popular in the 1960’s, Playa del Carmen and its surrounding areas transformed from humble fishing villages to major tourist destinations. Around this time, the tourism industry began to develop, with the arrival of important development projects in the city.

This resulted in the establishment of high-class hotels, fine restaurants, all-inclusive resorts, and top-class bars and nightclubs. Moreover, the boat dock opened up to cruise lines, which brought in a lot more foreign tourists.
