Newspaper El Imparcial
|
In the early 1950’s, during a time of political unrest, Oaxaca was without a daily newspaper, so five siblings founded the newspaper El Imparcial whose principal mission was to serve the Oaxacan people well. They do their best to offer ethical, honest, and independent journalism.
El Imparcial is looking for people to help with all aspects of news production. If you’re interested in writing, editing, promotion, fundraising, photography, or illustration and if you speak Spanish at an advanced level, this would be a good job for you. El Imparcial allows its volunteers to be involved in many aspects of news production. They take on volunteers in all areas—writing, editing, promotion, fundraising, photography and illustration. Several of our volunteers have written and published articles with the newspapers, but it is necessary that volunteers arrive with at least an intermediate level in order to have an advanced level of Spanish upon completion of their coursework at Solexico. Volunteers will begin by observing how things work at the newspaper. They can shadow some of the writers and illustrators and can go in the field with researchers and photographers. Once a volunteer understands how El Imparcial’s system works, they can begin to research and write their own articles; help with fundraising and promotion; photograph events, sports’ events, political addresses and protests, etc. Volunteers may not have a fixed schedule in the offices but may be researching or shadowing away from the office part of the day. Often, they may work evening events but not go to the office in the morning. This work is a little more flexible due to the field, but an advanced level of Spanish is necessary.
