The city of Guanajuato is a historical and picturesque town of agreeable little plazas, streets lined with stairs and houses of pastel-colored facades and balconies trimmed with iron work, and flower-filled window boxes, located about a five-hour drive northwest of Mexico City. The town is a maze of cobblestone streets and alleys that wind around steep hillsides upon a small ravine, opening into vistas of beautiful churches and small plazas.
Guanajuato’s buildings are stunning; there are grand mansions, beautiful churches and theatres which all serve as a reminder of the cities colonial past. This architecture also won it the status of being a UNESCO world heritage site. However there is more to the city than buildings alone. It is also home to famous silver mines, a fantastic mummy museum and some very interesting streets!
